The “Deborah C. Sears Scholarship” is awarded to full-time undergraduate students who demonstrate academic excellence, community service and/or ֦Ƶ school involvement, and are interested in improving the communities in which they live. Scholarship recipients should also exemplify the mission and goals of the ֦Ƶ, Dominguez Hills’ Black Faculty and Staff Association, which is to encourage and promote the professional, academic and personal development of others. This scholarship is non-renewable. Previous award recipients may not apply.
Award Criteria
- Any full-time ֦Ƶ continuing undergraduate student - must have completed at least one semester at ֦Ƶ at the time the scholarship is awarded.
- Minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA (includes ֦Ƶ & transfer courses) - copy of unofficial transcripts required.
- Statement of community service and/or ֦Ƶ school involvement - provide evidence of service (i.e. references).
- One letter of recommendation - submit letter in a sealed envelope with application packet).
- 1000 word essay. Topic: How my education will assist in improving the community in which I live.
The Miriam Matthews Visions Scholarship is designed to assist ֦Ƶ students of African descent and consists of $500-1000. Two scholarships will be awarded annually. Undergraduate and graduate students may apply.
Award Criteria
- Attend ֦Ƶ full-time and be fully matriculated (undergraduate = 12 units; graduate = 6 units).
- Have a minimum cumulative college GPA of 2.70; unofficial copy of ֦Ƶ transcripts required.
- Be a resident of the greater Los Angeles area (address verification may be required).
- Personal statement: Explanation of need for financial assistance with college expenses and
- Explanation of strong level of community service. Provide evidence of service (i.e. references).
Renewal Process
A student who receives a scholarship under this program may be eligible to apply for a one-time renewal of the scholarship. Renewal candidates must meet each of the following requirements:
- Maintain required GPA for scholarship and satisfactory academic progress determined by ֦Ƶ.
- Show proof of successfully completing full-time academic study the previous academic year; submit unofficial copy of ֦Ƶ transcripts.
- Personal statement: Explanation of need for continued financial assistance with college expenses and explanation of continued level of community service.
